Green Mountain Club Executive Director Mike DeBonis shares images and stories of hiking and managing America’s oldest long distance hiking trail. Participants will learn about the history, management, and current use of the Long Trail and Appalachian Trail in Vermont.

Mike returned to his home state to join the GMC’s staff as executive director in 2014. Prior to working for the GMC, Mike served as executive director of the Forest Guild, a national organization of professional foresters dedicated to practicing and promoting responsible forest stewardship. In 1996, Mike completed a southbound AT thru-hike and completed hikes of the Long Trail in 2004, 2017, and 2021. Mike earned a bachelor’s degree in natural resources from Johnson State College and a Master of Forestry degree from Yale University. Mike is past chair of the Vermont Trails and Greenways Council and currently serves on the Vermont Outdoor Recreation Economic Collaborative. In his spare time, Mike enjoys tinkering with old cars and motorcycles and running on the trails and back roads of the Mad River Valley. Mike and his wife, Jennifer, make their home in Moretown, Vermont along with their two dogs.
